Watch and control breaks

Breaks are a first-class punch, not a note on the shift.

How an employee starts and ends a break

On the Punch Clock page they tap Break Start, type their code, then later Break End and the same code.

That writes:

  • A Tracking event for each tap
  • A Break row (start and end) when they end the break

Those times show on Timesheet Report in the Break column.

Watch breaks from Dashboard

The In break tile counts people who started a break today and have not ended it.

If Settings Mark on report when exceed break time is on, Dashboard also uses Break time (minutes) (plus five minutes) to flag long breaks in the current report window.

When someone is gone too long:

  1. Open Dashboard and confirm In break.
  2. Click their row if they still appear under working now.
  3. Call or text from the contact card.
  4. If they forgot to punch Break End, a manager can fix the times on Timesheet Report (see Correct a missed punch).

See break minutes on the week

Open Timesheet Report. Each row can show a break start/end and the deducted minutes when Settings Discount break for totals is Yes. Net hours are what pay runs use when that setting is on.

Timesheet with break minutes
Timesheet rows. Break pills (for example 30 minutes) sit between Hours and Net.

Settings that affect breaks

In Settings:

  • Break time (minutes) — Dashboard “too long” threshold (the live count adds five minutes)
  • Discount break for totals — Net vs raw hours on Timesheet and pay runs
  • Allow check breaks — saved on the account; the punch page always shows break buttons in this remake

Do not invent break rules on the client. Change Settings, then look at Timesheet again.
